The past couple of years have been significant for Amber Heard as she's courted headlines, the like of which she would have wished to avoid.
The wild airing of dirty laundry through the tabloids and the courts has ultimately detracted from the 37-year-old actress's promise and precision as a brilliant star on the big screen.
Yet, with 2024 offering new possibilities by which she can remind a global legion of admiring fans of the talent she holds within, Heard appears upbeat and optimistic again.
She is, after all, marking over a decade of influential presence in Hollywood as an actress and model. After gaining initial recognition for her riveting performance in the movie version of the successful television sports drama Friday Night Lights, Heard's star quickly rose. Her cinematic journey flourished as she landed roles in high-profile films like the aquatic superhero epic Aquaman, for which she will also be in the sequel, and the romantic drama The Rum Diary.
Not just restricted to mainstream cinema, Heard has demonstrated her artistic range by delving into indie films, showcasing her versatility and depth as an actress.
Beyond the silver screen, the Texan is a fervent activist. With a passion for human rights and women's issues, she uses her platform to advocate and raise awareness.
On the personal front, in 2021, Amber embraced motherhood, welcoming her daughter Oonagh Paige. This new chapter has added another dimension to her multifaceted life, and she yearns to get back on track.
STRIPLV: You've reprised your role in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Can you tell us about the experience of filming this sequel? HEARD: Working on the movie was an exhilarating journey. We filmed in some breathtaking locations that truly brought the underwater kingdom to life. There's a seamless connection to the first film, yet with fresh narratives that I believe the audience will truly appreciate. It was such a privilege to dive back into this world. It was desperately what I needed, and it has reignited my thirst for creativity. STRIPLV: Speaking of filming, where did the majority of it take place? HEARD: We shot in various locations, so in London, in the south-west of England, in Los Angeles, Hawaii. Some locations were a lot more challenging than others, but all were an inspiration. A significant portion was filmed in studio setups, but we also ventured to those picturesque coastal regions to capture authentic oceanic vibes. The dedication of the crew to get the perfect shot, no matter the locale, was truly commendable. STRIPLV: How did you prepare for your role this time, especially considering the links to the first film? HEARD: Preparing for the role of Mera was a demanding process that spanned both physical and mental dimensions. On the physical front, I underwent an extensive training regime, adapting my body to the challenging underwater sequences that the film demanded. These sessions were not just about building stamina but also mastering the fluidity and grace of underwater movement. On the mental side, I delved deep into the psyche of Mera, re-watching the first film on almost a constant repeat in order to truly comprehend her journey. Understanding the nuances of her character arc was crucial, especially as we charted her evolution in the sequel. It was a delicate balance, ensuring I retained the essence of Mera from the original while bringing forth a matured, evolved version of her in the sequel. Every day on set was a lesson in maintaining that continuity yet pushing boundaries to showcase her growth. STRIPLV: Moving from Hollywood to Spain, that's quite a shift. How's life in Spain treating you? HEARD: Making the move to Spain has been a deeply invigorating experience for me. While Hollywood pulsates with its own unique rhythm and undeniable allure, Spain presents a contrasting ambiance. The pace is more leisurely, allowing moments of reflection and connection. The culture here is woven with centuries of history and tradition. Every meal is a celebration of flavors, a testament to Spain's culinary heritage. The architecture, from grand cathedrals to quaint cobbled streets, speaks volumes of its artistic legacy. For my daughter and me, Spain has been more than just a home; it's been a sanctuary. The relative anonymity we enjoy here provides a soothing respite from the constant glare of Hollywood's spotlight, offering us both a chance to grow, explore, and breathe away from the whirlwind of celebrity life. STRIPLV: In a world that's always watching, how else do you find relaxation away from the public eye? HEARD: Such is the crazy, fast-paced world we live in. Prioritizing personal space is not just a luxury for me but also a necessity for my mental well-being. Solace for me often comes from the simple joys: getting lost in a good book, centering myself through meditation, or cherishing those wonderful and precious moments with my daughter. STRIPLV: Speaking of your daughter, how has becoming a mother changed or influenced your perspective? HEARD: Embracing motherhood has profoundly reshaped my world. This journey has amplified my grasp of love's depth, the weight of responsibility, and the virtue of patience. Every day presents lessons, challenges, and moments of pure joy. Professionally, it's refined my perspective too. I've become more discerning in the roles I accept, keenly aware that each choice contributes to a legacy. I aspire to create a body of work that not only I'm proud of but also serves as an inspiration for my daughter in the years to come. STRIPLV: As you reflect on your diverse career and personal milestones, what are your plans for the future? HEARD: I'm keen on exploring roles that challenge me and resonate with my evolving perspectives. There's also a desire to work behind the scenes, maybe directing or producing. Personally, I want to continue advocating for issues I believe in while ensuring a grounded environment for my daugher.
