SARAYA-JADE BEVIS - PAIGE

STRIPLV: So, Paige did you ever think that they’d be making a movie about your family’s story?
BEVIS: I never thought that this day would be here. It blows my mind every day at 26-years-old to have a biopic done on you. And then having the producer to be Dwayne Johnson and Stephen Merchant as the writer and director I mean what the hell is going on around here? It’s so cool.
STRIPLV: You’ve had to fight hard to be where you are today. Your story is very inspiring. What do you hope that young girls can take away from this?
BEVIS: Well, I just hope that they can be true and wholeheartedly themselves; that’s a good message that I would like to portray in my story. I was trying to be something that I wasn’t in the movie, and then I realized that being myself was my superpower and helped me to be where I am today. I hope they walk away inspired by that.
STRIPLV: What was it like to see the other actors portray your family members?
BEVIS: It was strange because I got to watch it with Florence who was sitting right next to me and she was like sinking lower and lower, and she said it was just like so weird that I am sitting next to you playing you on the big screen. She did just an incredible job and then you look at my family and you think [they’re] like superscripted, but they are just animated like that. They are insane. They are outrageous, outspoken, they are crude like that.
STRIPLV: What was it like working with Stephen?
BEVIS: It was really incredible. I was always a big fan of his work. I love “The Office” one of my favorite shows I loved it. He was so hands-on with everything too. He would call and text me every other day and ask me well how were you feeling at this moment, who were you talking to?” He was really passionate about this movie, and it made me love him even more.
STRIPLV: What did you think of Florence playing you?
BEVIS: It was just uncanny; it blew my mind. Florence Pugh was fantastic. All of them just took the time to really study us (my family and I), watching the documentary, watching past videos. When Florence had to go and do the Staples Center, she texted me like ok?” I am about to go out. What were you feeling, what was your facial expression like?” And I just had to talk her through it and tell her everything is going to be fine. She was fantastic in it.
STRIPLV: And how about The Rock?
BEVIS: He’s so great isn’t he? He’s just wonderful. He’s just a really beautiful human being. What you see is what you get with Dwayne. I don’t think there is a bad bone in his body.
STRIPLV: What advice would you have for someone looking to break into the wrestling world today?
BEVIS: I would give them the same advice that Dwayne gave me and that’s to stay humble and hungry. Because you want to be able to work with people and have people want to work with you. Hungry is because you want to set goals and you want to be patient because it all isn’t just handed to you.
STRIPLV: Tell us about the first time you met Dwayne.
BEVIS: I was debuting the next day, so it was Wrestle Mania in New Orleans and Dwayne got his agent to come and get me and take me to his room. It was the first time that I was officially meeting Dwayne, so I was just like so scared. I was summoned into his office right now; I was nervous. I was like oh my gosh this is The Rock he is like one of my idols. This is crazy, and he sat me down, and he was like ok welcome to WWE by the way. I was like thank you. I mean to this day I am still starry-eyed when I talk to him. He sat me down and said “Hey I was just in a meeting with the writers. You are going to be debuting tomorrow, and I was like what? I was already very emotional because I’d been in developmental for a few years now I get to debut. And then he is like “Oh and another thing, you are going to become Diva’s champion.” I just start sobbing. It was all of my dreams come true. Then he was like “Another thing I was in England for The Fast and the Furious, and I stumbled on your family’s documentary” which is also called Fighting with my Family.” you can watch it on YouTube if you want before you see this movie. He says to me “Your family is incredible; they remind me of my family, and you have this great story. I am going to make a movie about it.” I was just like what? It was just so overwhelming all this information. I called my family straight away and said I just met with Dwayne Johnson, and my dad was like right no big deal—my dad doesn’t get too excited about stuff as you can see in the movie—Nick Frost does it great. I told him, and they are going to make a movie about us, and he’s just like no way, you are having a fucking laugh. And I said no I don’t know when it’s happening. Then my dad, he had this thing with us; don’t get too excited, don’t get your hopes up, it’s not set in stone. Then I told him about the Diva’s championship, and he lost it screaming “Yeah!” into the phone. (laughing)
STRIPLV: Has your family seen the film and what was their reaction?
BEVIS: Oh my gosh they lost it. They lost it. So my dad, he’s quite the character as you’ve probably seen in the movie if you’ve watched it already. He was a little bit annoyed because “Why is Ray Winston not playing me?” He just didn’t understand, and he didn’t know Nick Frost very well. I was like dad, he is very talented. I promise you he is going to do a good job. And as soon as he saw it, he was like yeah, he is pretty good, isn’t he? He loved it the whole family loved it, and my brother called me straight away after the movie and said “I just wanted to say that I love you and I was like I love you too.” They loved it.
STRIPLV: The audiences love the movie. Why do you think it resonates?
BEVIS: It’s a very relatable story, and also everyone loves a good underdog story too. There is not a lot of female-based sports movies like this. It’s so similar to Rocky as well. It’s not just a wrestling movie the way Rocky wasn’t just about boxing. It’s about family, it’s about struggles, a rags to riches kind of story. It’s just kind of a very relatable thing.
