IS SEX ADDICTION REAL?
The headlines are full of celebrities and politicians who blame their mistakes on a problem with sex addiction. When Tiger Woods admitted to it, he began what seems to have become a trend. “Hypersexuality is a problematic behavior that can damage people’s lives. It’s clear that it falls into the category of an obsessive-compulsive problem, and to me, it clearly does have elements of an addiction, where a behavior is hard to control,” says Dr. Small, a UCLA Professor of Psychiatry. His colleague, Nicole Prause, found that when showing self-described sex addicts sexually provocative images, it did not create the same reaction in their brain waves that drug abuse addicts experience. The conclusion was that hypersexuality is unlikely a true addiction and more research is needed. Dr. Small does say: “When people experience uncontrolled urges that negatively impact their lives, they should seek professional help.”
