MUSEUM OF SEX

SEX AS ART – FROM VINTAGE TO MODERN AT MUSEUM OF SEX

SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS
For its 2nd annual Kinesthesia Art Commission award, the Museum of Sex presents Splendor in the Grass, a new art installation created by world renowned Studio Droog. Designed as an “erotic campground,” Droog has transformed the museum into a surreal adult playground, where five interactive camping tents stimulate phases of sexual stimulation and arousal. Enveloped in elaborate forest-like scenery, this simulated habitat is complete with a moving sky and campfire, intertwining concepts of sex, human relationships and sensuality. Visitors are invited to intoxicate themselves with pheromones in “Wetten Your Appetite,” a cloud chamber of scent and steam; pump up the movement by crawling through “Pneumatic Kinesthesia,” a tent engaging various body positions; and to raise their body temperature in “The Ice Oven Challenge” tent, a thermal exploration of sex, body heat and heartbeat. Other tents include “Grass Girl Arouses,” a gentle caress of touch and sound, and “Autoerotic Kinesthesia,” a mirrored kaleidoscope of self-lust. Both presentations are on exhibit at Museum of Sex on 233 Fifth Avenue (at 27th Street) in New York City • 212.689.6337 • MuseumOfSex.com

HARDCORE: A CENTURY AND A HALF OF OBSCENE IMAGERY
Literary and visual representations of sex acts from previous centuries were every bit as “hardcore” as our modern depictions. Despite cultural prudery and legislation that led to the confiscation, destruction or bowdlerization of many sexually explicit artifacts, a portion of these “objectionable” items still remains. While “obscene” material has frequently been relegated to back rooms or secret vaults or kept hidden in private and secret collections, the Museum of Sex shines a light on this often overlooked part of our past to help bring this hardcore history back into the public eye to give us a glimpse into our bawdy past.
