When Marvel’s comic book, Ant-Man, first appeared in 1962, I was one of the lucky fortunate few to purchase an original copy.  In fact, I had original copies of almost every Marvel comic book that you can name.  I would most likely still have them today, if my mother hadn’t decided to clean up my room to make the place look nice, which makes no sense, since no one ever came to visit me in my room.  I guess I was a super villain and her job as supermom was to conquer me and clean up my mess.  If she had only known the destruction she had actually created, because if I had any of those original copies in mint condition today, I'd be one of the richest super villains having the cash to have purchased my own island.  While I was a big fan of most Marvel comics, I had a difficult time connecting with Ant-Man, since it was very difficult for me to imagine myself very small or giant size, and it was very difficult for the comics to be able to visually project this in the printed pages.  Well, enough for the history lesson, let's get going on to this movie.

When I heard they were green lighting the series, Ant-Man, onto the big screen starring Paul Rudd, the comedian, I had a lot of reservations.  Paul Rudd as a superhero?  Come on, really?  The guy who’s in all those comedy films, such as Knocked Up, The 40 Year Old Virgin, I Love You, Man and Role Models, a superhero?  They tried that with Seann William Scott in The Rundown (his co-star in Role Models) and that didn't work out too well.  It would be the same as making Jonah Hill an action hero.  It's very tough to fit a square cylinder into a round hole.  So, even amongst all of the hype and publicity that this film has received prior to its opening, I had steep reservations.  I knew it was going to be a major popcorn movie because hey, it's Marvel, so I got to the theater armed with drink and popcorn in hand, 3-D glasses on my head and ready to rock and roll.

Once the movie started, all of my fears, apprehensions and anxiety shed off my body like a snake shedding their outer skin.  Right from the onset, the movie was a tense, action-packed, power struggle, and even had Michael Douglas punching out his friendly rival, and all sorts of drama before we ever even saw any inklings of an Ant-Man.  Even Shield Agent, Peggy Carter, made an appearance.  What a great way to start off a movie.

This movie had it all:  drama, action, comedy, fabulous CGI, great camaraderie between the characters, gags, hysterical voiceover sequences, and a great well-thought-out story and script.  I don't know about you, but I can tell you that almost everyone in the theater was willing to sit through another screening immediately after seeing the movie—it's that good.  It hit on all twelve cylinders.  You liked every character on the screen, even the ants, and especially the toy model train set.  I was lucky enough to see it in 3-D, and I can tell you that the quality of the filming was excellent.  They were able to totally capture the look and feel of being tiny in size in ways you had never thought imaginable.  The technical ability of CGI has advanced so far in just the last few years, it’s truly amazing to see.  It’s an ‘E’ Ticket all the way.

My hesitation regarding Paul Rudd as the lead quickly fell by the wayside.  Michael Douglas, Corey Stoll, Evangeline Lilly, Bobby Cannavale, Judy Greer and Michael Peña turned in great performances.  They even threw in some old and some new actors to help round it out, such as SNL's Garrett Morris and today's upcoming star, T.I.  While a supporting actor, Michael Peña turns in a stellar, hysterical performance.

If your heart and passion is for films like Gone with the Wind, this movie may not be for you.  But if you like The Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain America, James Bond, etc., then this movie is for you.  Make sure you put it on your bucket list because it is definitely worth watching.  And make sure you stay till the very, very end (after the 100,000 people listed on the credits, it’s a long list).  The 2nd teaser clip is well worth the wait.

I'd watch it again and again and again, if only my mother hadn't thrown away my comics.  Oh well, I guess I'll just have to continue going to the free screenings.
