RICKI AND THE FLASH
ANOTHER MAKEOVER FOR STREEP– SINGING ALONGSIDE REAL-LIFE ROCKER RICK SPRINGFIELD
By Jack Wellington
The ever chameleonic and charismatic, Meryl Streep gets a whole new gig in this summer’s comedy drama, Ricki and the Flash, as Oscar-winning director Jonathan Demme and Academy Award-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody team up to create what’s expected to be a heartfelt original and electrifying film.
Streep showed us her pipes in her strong vocal performance in last year’s Into The Woods. Now the three-time Academy Award winner gets a chance at a more bluesy rock style, alongside real singer/songwriter and actor, Rick Springfield, in this movie that is loaded with live musical performances, sung by none other than Streep, herself.
Director, Jonathan Demme, who is best known for his direction on films like Philadelphia, The Silence of the Lambs and The Manchurian Candidate, seems perfectly aligned as director for this rockin’ “dramedy”, as he’s done several documentaries on some of rock’s greatest performers like Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, and Kenny Chesney.
The Tri-Star Pictures summer film stars Streep as Ricki Rendazzo, a guitar heroine who made a world of mistakes as she followed her dreams of rock ‘n roll stardom. Returning home, Ricki gets a shot at redemption and a chance to make things right as she faces the music with her family. Streep stars opposite her real-life daughter, Mamie Gummer; which should make for some extraordinary tear-jerking moments. Rick Springfield plays a member of the Flash band, who is also in love with Streep’s character, Ricki. Kevin Kline plays Ricki’s ex-husband; and Audra McDonald as Kline’s new wife.
Ricki and the Flash premieres in theaters on Friday, August 7, 2015.
