THE BUSH IS BACK!

Pubic hair is back in style. You can see it more and more on the pages of this magazine and everywhere else you look. Porn stars seen on these pages like Dani Daniels, Riley Reid, Karlie Montana, Jessie Andrews, Raven Rockette and Shyla Jennings have opted to grow their bushes out and be loud and proud about how beautiful being natural is.

Actresses Cameron Diaz and Gwyneth Paltrow have written about the benefits and health reasons for a woman to have pubic hair and arguably brought the topic more mainstream. According to Google Trends, the search volume for “pubic hair” was the highest in January of this year, when Diaz’s The Body Book was published. American Apparel added pubic hair to their mannequins in store, Lady Gaga posed nude on the cover of Candy magazine sporting a full bush, and even Dakota Johnson shows off a full bush as the character Anastasia Steele in the erotic film, 50 Shades of Grey. Young girls inundated with internet images of porn, with women completely shaved and waxed bare, have for years emulated what they perceived as sexy and attractive to the opposite sex. But just like all trends, everything has a way of reversing itself, and you now see more and more women going natural and showing their true beauty.

Shaving and waxing the pussy originally started in late ‘80s porn, because directors wanted to be more explicit and show more of the vagina, as hair could sometime block the camera view. The move toward waxing seemed to some like a marker of female degradation, or maybe a growing wave of widespread pedophilia?  Discussions about the meaning of genital grooming inundated message boards and the Internet as irritating and stubborn as the ingrown hairs which waxing can cause. This influenced a generation to go hairless.

But there are some medical reasons why a woman should have hair on her vagina. Removing pubic hair irritates and inflames the hair follicles, leaving microscopic open wounds, causing irritation of the shaved or waxed area.  That irritation, combined with the moist environment of the genitals, makes a happy petri dish for some of the nastiest of bacterial diseases.  There is an increase in staph boils and abscesses, and it is not at all unusual to find pustules and other hair follicle inflammation papules on shaved pubics. Some doctors have found that shaved and waxed pubic areas and genitals are also more vulnerable to herpes infections, due to the miniscule lesions being unprotected to infection carried by the mouth or genitals.  There may be vulnerability to the spreading of other STDs, as well. Other medical reasons for growing a bush are that it provides cushioning against rubbing that can cause skin abrasion and damage, and acts as a shield to bacteria and other unwanted pathogens.

Waxing establishments are being sent into a tailspin with profits plunging, as more and more women are choosing to keep the hair down under. Hair removal brand Completely Bare announced it was re-branding as Spruce & Bond. The company will stay focused on hair removal, but under a name that suggests a much more vague posture on waxing preference. Spruce & Bond isn’t the only company feeling the effects of pubic hair’s recent popularity.  Strip: Ministry of Wax, an international group of hair removal salons, recorded a recent decline in all-off Brazilian waxes among its U.S. customers. According to Strip’s director Ramon Padilla, “Having things taken completely off isn’t the norm anymore. It’s more of the exception.”

Times they are a changing—just Google it. Like any other fad that comes and goes—like overalls and acid wash, anti-gravity hairdos, leggings, and diet soda, the pubes pendulum is changing. According to an online poll, some 51 percent of women “do not style or groom their pubic hair, and their partners love it!” Just check out Playboy over the past year and you’ll notice more and more women with hair, even though the publication showed virtually no hair over the past decade—another indicator that the bush is back and we love it!
