With a trail of career-defining hits that could practically be tagged together in a personal text:
“Whatcha Say” – (I’m) “In My Head” – “Don’t Wanna Go Home” – (with) “It Girl” – (so I’m) “Riding Solo” – (to) “The Other Side” – (until you) “Marry Me” – (or maybe just) “Talk Dirty” and “Wiggle”
…the 24-year-old singer/songwriter first became a big hit in the pop music scene, and has crossed over back into his original first love: hip hop, with his latest couple of singles, “Talk Dirty” (ft. 2 Chainz) and “Wiggle” (ft. Snoop Dogg).
Born to Haitian parents in Miramar, Florida, Derulo’s love for music began at an early age, writing his first song at the age of eight. He attended performing arts schools, and by the time he was in his teens, Derulo was writing for artists like Pitbull, Lil Wayne, Diddy, Sean Kingston, Cassie, Pleasure B, Danity Kane, and he even co-wrote the song, “Bossy”, for New Orleans-based rapper, Birdman.
In 2009, Derulo moved from behind-the-scenes writer to frontman, signing to a subsidiary of Warner Bros. and releasing his debut hit “Whatcha Say”, which topped the Billboard charts and soared to the Top Ten abroad. His second single, “In My Head”, hit No. 5 in the U.S., with Derulo’s full-length debut album arriving in early 2010. His sophomore album, Future History, followed in 2011 with another hit, “Don’t Wanna Go Home”, which was only the beginning of his trail of future hit songs to come.
Success hasn’t been a total breeze for this hit song maker. It was just after starting his Future History Tour in the beginning of 2012, when Derulo suffered a neck injury. That caused him to not only cancel the entire tour, but force him to recuperate and reflect upon his injury – creating his next single, “The Other Side” in April of 2013 from his Tattoos EP released later that year.
2014 has seen a new side of Jason Derulo, as he delved back into his urban roots in his newest album, Talk Dirty, collaborating for the first time with fellow talents: 2 Chainz, Snoop Dogg, Tyga, Jordin Sparks, Kid Ink, and Pitbull. All lend their talents to Talk Dirty with production efforts by Timbaland, DJ Mustard, RedOne, The Cataracs, Jon Bellion, Wallpaper, Jim BEANZ, Ammo, Martin Johnson, Jonas Jeberg, BeatGeek, Sam Sumser, Jared Lee, Rush and Chloe Angelides. The romantic pop side of Derulo has matured with some more naughty and adult content on his new hip hop album, with hit tracks, “Talk Dirty” and his newest, “Wiggle”. The common thread? Hit songwriting that Derulo has become known for.
“Talk Dirty” is more on the risqué side, with lyrics like: “but your booty don’t need explaining” and “first-class seat on my lap, girl.” When it comes to answering people who feel the song is ‘objectifying women,’ Derulo is shocked, stating:
“ What are you even talking about? ”
“ I think in 2014, things, you know, are getting more and more free (and) liberal. I hear a lot worse. ”
Jason Derulo will be performing in Vegas two times this summer at Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Las Vegas’ REHAB this July 20th and August 30th, 2014.HardRockHotel.com
